Department of Clinical Nutrition & Dietetics
The department of Clinical Nutrition & Dietetics offers nutritional assessment and dietary advice to patients who are under the care of St Luke's Hospital.
The aim of the dietitian working in cancer care is to ensure optimum nutrition for patients undergoing or recovering from cancer treatments such as radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Dietary intervention in people with cancer can improve tolerance to radiotherapy and chemotherapy in addition to improving quality of life.
This service is available to both inpatients and outpatients.
What is a Dietitian / Clinical Nutritionist ?
A Dietitian or Clinical Nutritionist is a health professional who is qualified to give acurate advice and information on all aspects of nutrition & diet. Dietitians have a scientific background and give advice specific to the person or the disease. Dietitians use their knowledge of food, nutrition and other related disciplines such as biochemistry, physiology and social science to promote health, and aid in the management of illness . The professional body for Clinical Nutritionists/ Dietitians in Ireland is the Irish Nutrition & Dietetic Institute ( INDI ).
