Pathology Laboratory ServicesThe Pathology Laboratory provides a range of Blood Tests and other tests for the patients attending St. Luke's Hospital. These tests are an essential aid for the medical/nursing staff in the care of patients during their treatment at the hospital. The Laboratory Departments are as follows: PhlebotomyThis is the first port of call for the patient who requires blood tests. For further information about Phlebotomy see link page entitled: "Phlebotomy Department" under Pathology Laboratory department. The Phlebotomist takes the bloods for testing and sends them the following departments of the Laboratory: Haematology / CoagulationA range of Blood Tests, which monitors the cells of the Blood and includes Red Cells, White Cells and Platelets. Coagulation tests check that the body maintains proper Blood Clotting mechanisms. Blood TransfusionThis department ensures along with Hospital Haemovigilance, that patients receive the right amount of Blood if it is requested by medical staff. In this event, patient consent is always sought beforehand. Biochemistry/Tumour MarkersA range of Blood Serum Tests, which monitor the functioning of body systems e.g. liver, kidneys, hormonal systems. These tests help the doctor to make the necessary adjustments in the patient's therapy during their treatment cycle. MicrobiologyThis department monitors patient's bacterial flora and provides the results necessary to allow the proper treatment of patients in the event of any sign of infection. HistologyThis is the microscopic study of body tissues, which distinguishes between normal and abnormal cells. | |||||||
