Transfer to HSE

Under the  Health (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2010 the Board of St. Luke’s Hospital  was dissolved  and  St. Luke’s Staff, assets and liabilities were transferred to the Health Service Executive on 1st August, 2010.

The final Board of Directors was the 15th Board since the establishment of the Cancer Association of  Ireland Ltd.   The first Board  of the Association, which was responsible for the development of St. Luke’s Hospital,  sat for a five year term commencing 29 June, 1950 and was chaired by Mr. George E.  (Ted) Russell.  Mr. Russell who died in 2004, aged 92, always maintained  a warm affection for St. Luke’s and expressed great interest in the Hospital’s 50 year anniversary celebrations in 2004.

The final Board was chaired by Padraic A. White, whose close involvement with St. Luke’s spanned a period of 12 years.

In addition to Ted Russell and Padraic White, four other Chairman served St. Luke’s between  1950 and 2010.  These were Owen P. Hargadon, Reginald P. Redmond, Kevin O’Donnell and Brian Slowey.

St. Luke’s Hospital will continue to provide oncology services until 2014 as part of the St. Luke’s Radiation Oncology Network  (Rathgar, St. James’s, Beaumont).

The Health (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2010, section 6 (subsections 5 & 6),  states that the HSE shall use the land vested in it by this section for the purposes of the delivery of health and personal social services within the meaning of the Health Act 2004.
