Arts and Activity Centre
Brief Description Of What The Dept Does:St Luke's Arts and Activities Centre was established in 2001 to provide support and rehabilitation for patients. The initial stages were devoted to sourcing art materials, devising activities and promoting the Centre.Over the years, the number of patients attending the Centre has steadily grown in numbers and popularity. The variety of activities being offered by the Centre has also grown and range from different forms of painting, pottery, paperwork, jewellery and mosaic to board games, films and music sessions. Every year we would also complete several large group projects and hold guest workshops. Since 2006, the Centre has worked with patients to design Christmas cards, this is now an annual project and continues to be very successful. The Centre has also taken part in an "Art in healthcare settings" exhibition organised by the HSE in 2005. The work of the Centre also featured in the TV programme "Capital D" in 2006. Our annual Newsletter, now in its fourth edition, is included in a national database of arts and health publications, the centre is also registered with the HSE Arts committee. Most recently the Centre held its first large scale exhibition of Patients work, this was held in the hospital in November 2008 and was very well received by patients and staff alike. Patients may drop into the Centre without any prior arrangement. The activities are structured to appeal to the total beginner and to patients with previous experience of arts and crafts. The staff at the Centre aim to provide a relaxed atmosphere where patients can find fun, conversation, stimulation, space and peace for themselves and the opportunity to discover or revisit their artistic interests. Displaying patients art forms are an important part of their therapy and a number have been put on display in the Hospital. Additional Facilities for PatientsOur noticeboard provides information on events in Dublin galleries and art courses around the country. For young patients we provide colouring books, poster paints and games in addition to the other facilities at the centre. Internet facilities, a colour photocopier, and scanner are available at the centre. The patio garden has been developed for patients' pleasure and relaxation. We attempt to meet the needs of the diverse range of patients who come to the centre.
